Chelsea fans may be happy that Pochettino has decided to rest £100m man tonight

Chelsea’s midfield pair of Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo was supposed to be the foundation to their success. The £100m-odd paid for each was supposed to be the guarantee. In the end, both have disappointed, individually and as a pair.

Enzo seems to have been really off the pace in recent weeks. And there has been talk of a niggling injury. That seemed to be confirmed when he was added to the club’s injury list for the week.

Mauricio Pochettino insisted it was only minor in his Friday press conference, but admitted that Enzo hadn’t trained since the Sheffield United game. It’s not clear how many sessions he’s managed since then. An Argentine journalist, Gaston Adul, has tonight Tweeted that it’s an ab issue – just an irritation not a tear. And then adds there’s a chance Enzo is rested tomorrow in order to be ready for Saturday’s Cup semi final.

A talent running low on gas

It’s easy to forget how good Enzo was last season, and he had some great games at the start of this season too. Playing so many games seems to have sapped his ability.

Whether or not he’s injured tomorrow, he hope he’s rested if he’s not up to it. This pernicious abdominal injury sounds nasty, and we don’t want any risks taken. Enzo hasn’t been at his best lately and a game off might do him good. Go on Mauricio, chuck Cesare Casadei into the mix and see what he can do. It would certainly add some physicality to the team. Then if you need Enzo’s finesse in the final stages, you can call for it then.

That leaves him fresh for the game against Man City at the weekend – which we can’t deny we’re excited for, as potentially the season’s last big game.
