(Video): Enzo drift evident in Chelsea’s highlights

Chelsea have an Enzo problem. Instead of pulling strings, he often gets forward into the box because the team is chasing the game and need men up. That happened yesterday against Middlesbrough.

What’s really clear from the highlights is how high up Enzo is. The further into the game it got, the further forward he roamed.

His starting position is up the pitch to press high, and the fact that Boro then scored and sat back while Chelsea wanted bodies in the box meant he was regularly really near the goal. A couple of chances came from it, but as usual he snatched at them a little. He’s not the kind of cool customer you want having one touch chances to score. He’s better deeper.

  1. Agreed.

Enzo is a classic #8, but he appears to fancy himself a #10 and that’s problematic. If you look back at the United game where we didn’t have Conor Gallagher filling all the gaps and working tirelessly to recover the ball, Enzo’s lack of positional discipline and Cole Palmer’s tendency to defend like Mesut Ozil were a big reason we got beat. United played through our midfield like it was Swiss cheese!

Fast forward to the Boro match and it’s unclear what Poch is saying to his fellow Argentine. Is he instructing Enzo to get higher or is #8 just taking it upon himself to take up positions that aren’t making best use of his talents? Who knows! But one things certain, if Poch doesn’t gets him straightened out it’s hard to see how Enzo fits in our best 11 (which would have to include Palmer at the 10, Gallagher at the 8 and Caicedo at the 6). That’s not good considering Enzo represents a 100m investment!
