He ended up bringing on teenage striker Deivid Washington as a pretty desperate roll of the dice, and the Brazilian did have perhaps our best late chance to equalise.
Thiago Silva fed a clever ball to Reece James, who fired in a cross which flicked off Cole Palmer and flew past Washington in prime position to score.
He had almost no time to react – but all he had to do was get a solid touch and it would have been a heroic moment.
