One pundit has echoed the thoughts and frustrations of all Chelsea fans last night after watching another England game with Gareth Southgate as manager.
The Three Lions boss ignored Levi Colwill in both games in the latest international break, despite calling him up to come along for his first ever senior squad inclusion.
Colwill would have been expecting a debut, especially since one of the games was a friendly. And Southgate had every chance to bring him on last night against Scotland yet chose to ignore him and bring on a player who has barely played lately, Harry Maguire.
This angered pundit and former England striker Alan Shearer, and it angered Chelsea fans too.
Shearer couldn’t believe that Southgate picked Maguire to come on over Colwill or Fikayo Tomori on the bench and was left concerned with what both players must be thinking now.
In words picked up by TBR Football, Shearer said:
“My only thing would be is that you’re putting Harry Maguire into the team. I know he started on the weekend, he’s put him on again tonight.
“The two guys on the bench, Tomori and Colwill, What are they sat there thinking?
“We’ve said it before, I know Harry’s done well for Gareth in the past, great professional but then Gareth chucks him tonight. You have to feel for him because clearly, he’s not match-fit because he hasn’t played matches.
“He doesn’t sort his feet out [for the won goal]. So, then the other two lads are thinking ‘Hang on, what have we got to do here?’.
“It’s a friendly game against Scotland, you’ve started him in the qualifier game. Why don’t you put one of us on at half-time instead of him? That’s what I’d be thinking. What have we got to do to get a game here?”
I’m sure the experience was good for Colwill so it wasn’t a total waste of time. But why on earth didn’t Southgate at least hand him his debut? Poor stuff.
