Details emerge of yet another midfielder Chelsea tried to sign late in transfer window

Chelsea had a crazy busy summer transfer window. But during the final days, it got even busier for the new owners of the club.

There appeared to be a last-minute scramble to sign a new centre midfielder, with Ajax’s Edson Alvarez being targeted on the final day. In the end of course, Chelsea got Denis Zakaria in on loan from Juventus in the final hours of the window and got that midfielder they were seeking.

It has since transpired that those might not have been the only two names they were chasing to bring in on deadline day, or at least close to deadline day.

Local Sheffield United insider James Sheild reports for The Star that Sheffield United did receive an approach from Chelsea about their midfielder Sander Berge during the summer transfer window.

Chelsea asked if United would be open to the idea of allowing Berge to depart on loan before pursuing a deal for Juventus’ Denis Zakaria instead. United reject the approaches.
