“Fast and smart” – Thomas Tuchel once again reiterates the need for a squad rebuild at Chelsea

The season is over again for Chelsea now and we all start pondering our reflections of what was one of the strangest seasons we have ever witnessed at this club.

Props to Thomas Tuchel for leading us through this period, I am not sure whether many other people would have the strength to be able to do this, but he’s done it all largely with a smile on his face and consistently making jokes.

But even he knows now that we all have to get serious this summer because the really hard work is about to begin. There will be many players leaving the club come the end of the summer transfer window, and that means a big squad rebuild, which Tuchel has emphasised on a number of occasions now in a clear message to the pending new Chelsea board.

He’s spoken about it once again last night after the final league game of the season, as reported by Football London.

“It’s a bit strange,” Tuchel said. “We will have a dinner together later and you don’t really know what’s going to happen; if we are able to sell, do we want to sell, do we have a chance to get alternatives.

“So the situation is not only for us as those responsible for the rebuild and responsible for the transfers, but also for the players it’s a strange situation. And you could feel it.

“Over a long, long period of time we managed to keep the focus and put it aside, but the longer it went after the international break, it had an impact on us, and still does. So let’s see, when, finally, we will have the chance to act and make up, because the disadvantage in terms of timing for the rebuild is big. We have to be fast and smart.

The two top teams [Man City and Liverpool] improve their teams and have teams that are very clear on which they build. It’s a rebuild necessary for us and that makes it more challenging, of course.”
