Chelsea ‘were in advanced talks to sign’ €6/7m rated player before sanctions but could reignite it

The sanctions put on Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich has certainly changed a lot of things at the club immediately.

The first of course is that the club is up for sale and close to getting a new owner, with decisions being made on that as we speak.

The next is that any transfer and contractual business right now has been put on the back burner right now as you’d imagine. But that doesn’t mean that any current targets might not be reignited once the new owners are in, and it will largely depend on whether they keep the same board members and recruitment team in place.

So it is certainly possible that they could still pursue a move to sign Chicago Fire goalkeeper Gabriel Slonina, who they were reportedly in ‘advanced talks to sign’ before the sanctions.

Talks have broken down, but transfer expert Fabrizio Romano claims the plan was to sign Slonina for €6/7m fee, then loan him back to Chicago until 2023.
