It looks like Chelsea tried to pull off a massive defensive signing last summer.
They looked very close to signing Jules Kounde from Sevilla but in the end decided against paying his full release clause after it appeared Sevilla moved the goal posts on his fee.

But he wasn’t the only defender they were looking to sign, and according to the reliable Fabrizio Romano, Chelsea wanted to make an €80M offer to sign Brazilian international centre back, Marquinhos from PSG.
His club weren’t open to selling though and the player also wasn’t keen on leaving PSG at that time, as Romano explained on his Podcast today.
🚨 Chelsea in June 2021 wanted to make an official proposal of €80M plus €10M add-ons for Marquinhos 🇧🇷 but PSG were not ready to accept any offers: Also the Brazilian was very happy at Paris. #CFC #PSG

It looks like Kounde stays the priority now for Chelsea though, and they have moved on from their ‘dream’ signing Marquinhos.
Sevilla are already exploring the market in case Jules Koundé will leave the club in June – including some Serie A options. It’s not time for decisions yet, but Sevilla are on it. ⚪️🔴 #Sevilla

Whatever happens, Chelsea are set for a pretty busy summer market, and they might try and get a deal or two done early to ward off other interest.
