“Who cares about the money?” – Thomas Tuchel opens up on Kepa Arrizabalaga’s situation

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga was called upon to help Chelsea keep a clean sheet and beat Tottenham 3-0 at the weekend, showing the importance of having a top quality backup keeper.

But the fact of the matter is, Kepa certainly wasn’t bought to be a backup keeper, and he certainly wont want to keep being one.

Despite this, Blues boss Thomas Tuchel says that Kepa is ‘happy’ at Chelsea, but might not be so happy with the current situation.

Tuchel was speaking in the media section of the press conference yesterday, with his extra quotes on Kepa being released over night.

His side take on Aston Villa tonight in the Carabao Cup third round, and there will be more chances for other players that might not be happy with the situation to get some minutes under their belts.

Tuchel was also speaking about that and how impossible it is for him to give them all minutes, as reported by The Sun.

He said:

“He seems happy to me in the place that he is and the part he plays in this team.

“He is pushing and he is fighting for his chances — but you cannot force situations.

“Now I have the feeling with his mindset that he is here, with the calmness and the positivity he trains with and he gets the rewards and it came to him.

“It was not necessary to prove to me he is a good keeper. I see this everyday.

“He did not try too hard to convince everyone that he is worth the money the club paid.

“Who cares about the money? It was paid and so what now?

“Can we afford to have a keeper of that value on the bench, you ask?

“If the money was too high or too low, these measurements do not exist for us.

“I have the feeling that this pressure is off his shoulders and it is well deserved because it is not his fault.

“We simply cannot give everybody the same amount of minutes. This is the same for the outfield players.”
