Saul Niguez explains his role in the team and position on the field in first official Chelsea interview

It all happened rather fast in the end, but Saul Niguez is now officially a new Chelsea player.

The transfer deadline day went from a deal to sign him being OFF, to Chelsea accelerating their interest and getting him signing in the final hours of the window.

He then took a flight to London yesterday and completed his interviews and photoshoots with the club.

His first official interview has been released this afternoon by Chelsea on the website, and there are some interesting snippets.

For those who aren’t too sure exactly what Saul brings to the park, he explains it very well himself here and the position he feels he is best playing in.

Saul said:

“I am a team player. I always play for the team. I could define myself as a box-to-box midfielder. I like joining the attack and scoring goals but also defending when needed.”

This is good to hear because it is largely one of the number 6 positions that Saul will being used in under Thomas Tuchel, especially if he sticks with his trusted three at the back formation.

Blues fans will be keen to now see him in action!

  1. Great to now have Saul, but not sure why so many comments saying that existing mid-fielders could suffer. Surely with four of similar skills, the obvious is to pair them up, and play them in alternative games providing they are fit. This would allow each pair time to recover, and ensure they are at their best in a busy season. Each pair should then play at least 25 games.
