“No pace” – Paul Scholes slams Chelsea attackers who gave United ‘nothing to worry about’

Chelsea and Manchester United met yesterday in what has often produced a classic game of end to end attacking football.

However, this stalemate failed to produce such an encounter, and saw two sides cancelling each other out in defence, and leaving the handbrake on too much in fear of conceding a goal.

We also just sat down with Tony Mount, the Father of Mason, who provided us with some great insights and opinions here.

Both teams then had to settle for just a point, when in reality both teams really needed all three points.

Former United midfielder Paul Scholes wasn’t impressed, in quotes produced by The Metro (as cited by Caught Offside).

He was criticising United’s defensive setup and the fact they stayed so deep in fear of Chelsea’s attackers doing some damage.

But Scholes says they should have committed more, due to the lack of quality from Chelsea’s attackers, particular Hakim Ziyech.

The Moroccan international has ‘no pace’, according to Scholes and is ‘nothing to worry about’ for United’s defence.

He said:

“A lot of the problems [from United] I see are them two centre-halves and goalkeeper – well, not so much goalkeeper today – but the centre-halves need protecting.

“Which means you’ve got to have your two holding midfield players right next to them all the time and it takes away everything from your attacking ability.

“They don’t get up the pitch, they can’t keep the ball in the last third of the pitch because they can’t sustain attacks because they’re too deep.

“And this is a recurring them now that keeps going on. If they’re going to get to that next level they’ve got to be braver, they’ve got to be braver in the centre of the pitch.

“The two centre-halves, leave them, let them defend. Who are you playing against? An average Chelsea forward. Not average, because I like Giroud, but he’s not going to run away from anyone. He’s perfect for them two today.

“Mason Mount isn’t going to run away from them, Ziyech isn’t quick, no pace. They’ve got nothing to worry about.

“Let your midfield players join in attacks and at least contribute something to the attacking side of the game.”
