Mateo Kovacic explains exactly how Thomas Tuchel is telling them to play

Thomas Tuchel is known as a tactical genius, a real student of the game, and he lives and breathes what he does.

Since arriving at Chelsea he has had very little time to implement his philosophies, but we are already starting to see signs of them shining through.

Strained relations, ruthlessness, week of turmoil, a tactical genius, and new reign – Just a few words that feature in my dramatic latest Chelsea FC Newsletter #Issue12 – Read HERE!

The major thing I have noticed so far is how progressive and direct Chelsea are being with the ball. Rather than just keeping possession to no avail, they are always looking to go forward and get to the goal, this is something they have not always done over the last few years.

Mateo Kovacic is one player who is really starting to shine under Tuchel, and he is enjoying his role in a midfield two being allowed to control possession and move forward with the ball from deep.

The Croatian was speaking after the 1-0 win over Tottenham last night, and he was explaining exactly what Tuchel has been telling the players to do, as reported by the Chelsea website.

“I think we’ve improved a lot in the last three games, we’ve got seven points. But we need to go game by game and try to be as up as possible and I think we can do it.

“I think we have little problems – we didn’t score against Burnley as well. In the last 15 minutes we were 1-0 up and it could be even more. This is a thing we need to improve, to finish games. I think this is one thing we will work a lot on.

“He [TT] explained to us what he wants. It’s exactly that – to play fast forward, to create chances, to be in the opposition’s half. I think we’ve improved a lot in the last three games but I think we can be even better & be even more confident.

“In the games coming, we will be even better and we need to even better because we can do it.

“It’s a good run [7 points from 9]. I think it should be nine because we had a great game against Wolves, unfortunately we didn’t win. But today we had another good game. Unfortunately we didn’t score the second to be more relaxed in the last 15/20 minutes. But it was a good game from us and we need to keep going.”
