“Great management! The kid needs a wake-up call” – Former Blue reflects on Tuchel’s Hudson-Odoi sub

It has been almost a week now since Callum Hudson-Odoi was subbed off by Thomas Tuchel after only 30 minutes of being subbed on against Southampton.

Chelsea on the whole were not playing well, and question marks were raised over a number of the players in the team at that moment. There was a collective lack of effort and intensity, and heads dropped.

Thomas Tuchel decided to haul off Hudson-Odoi, and it didn’t sit well with the player who kicked a bottle in anger coming off, and quite a few Chelsea fans and pundits didn’t take well to it either.

However, former Chelsea player Alan Hudson believes it was ‘great management’ from the new Blues head coach, claiming that the young winger ‘needs a wake-up call.’

Tuchel did select Hudson-Odoi once again from the start in the win over Atletico Madrid on Tuesday, and he put in a good performance.

Speaking to Caught Offside, Hudson said:

“Great management! The kid needs a wake-up call.

“He possesses undoubted ability, but needs someone to keep him at a level of consistency – something l prided myself in, as did Frank Lampard, John Terry and Ashley Cole in their day. That’s what you have to get through to these players.

“The kid at Arsenal, Smith Rowe, is very similar. l thought six weeks ago he looked a magnificent player of the future, but watched him in recent matches and he needs the same treatment.

“The Arsenal manager will ruin him if he allows this kid to keep passing it backwards, a bad habit to get into, and something Frank was accepting from his midfield players.”
