“We have to take responsibility” – Kai Havertz says players at fault for Southampton draw

It’s Monday morning and time for some reflection on Saturday’s antics.

Chelsea were once again their own worst enemies against Southampton at the weekend, failing to see out an early 2-0 lead.

Having conceded late on in the first half, the second half was always going to be a real struggle for Chelsea, knowing their defensive frailties and lack of individual confidence amongst some of the players.

As expected, there was a calamity of awful errors from Kurt Zouma and Kepa Arrizabalaga to let The Saints back in, then inevitably Chelsea threw away all three points at the death.

It is unfortunately something us Chelsea fans have grown all too used to witnessing over the last couple of seasons.

Kai Havertz says the players are taking the responsibility collectively for failing to see out the win on the day, and Frank Lampard has admitted the players did fail to carry out his basic instructions.

Havertz spoke to the Chelsea website, he said:

“We’re very frustrated about the result.

“We had 42 good minutes in the first half but then I made a mistake and we conceded a goal, which changed the game a little bit.

“We got it to 3-2 and then we have to take the result and get the win at home but we didn’t do it. Now we have to stick together and hopefully we can do better next time.

“We have to take responsibility for that. We have 11 players on the pitch and everybody has to work hard so we don’t concede goals like this.

“It’s not always one person who makes the mistake so we have to look at our mistakes and try to solve the problems.

“We only have one or two days, only one training session with all the players together so of course it’s different but every team has to deal with it, not only us. We didn’t have a lot of preparation so now we have to work hard and stay together to do better next time.”
