Frank Lampard explains why he signed Hakim Ziyech, and what he brings that others don’t

Chelsea welcomed back Hakim Ziyech to the starting eleven on Wednesday evening in the Champions League.

The new summer signing had played in a couple of pre-season matches, one of which he got injured in. Until this week, we had only seen him come off the bench in a couple of cameo appearances whilst he was working on getting back to full match fitness.

His presence was immediately noted against Krasnodar this week, and he showed why many believe that he will be Frank Lampard’s most important signing from the summer window.

Ziyech adds that extra quality and creativity, the type of qualities that a few players are just blessed with. He has a very dangerous left foot, one that is going to bring Chelsea plenty of happiness and success.

Lampard has explained that he signed Ziyech after watching him play at Ajax on a number of occasions, one of which was against Chelsea.

As reported by Team Talk, Lampard said:

“When we brought Hakim into the club it’s because I’d watched him a lot,” Lampard explained. “We’d played against them the year before.

“And I knew his qualities that he could play as a winger that gives us real width, but also gives us the clever movements when he comes off the line.

“He can really produce important passes, assist-style passes, or break-the-line passes; passes that he takes on that maybe other players don’t.

“So he brings us something certainly different from what we have in terms of style.

“There were glimpses, more than glimpses, of it last night [against Krasnodar], and they were really positive signs.”
