Chelsea step up interest in Declan Rice, youngster could go on loan to make room

There were a number of reports from the English press yesterday suggesting that Chelsea are stepping up their interest to sign West Ham midfielder Declan Rice.

The Evening Standard, The Times, and The Athletic all ran similar reports suggesting that Frank Lampard wants Rice to join Chelsea this summer, and the club are pushing ahead with the move.

Rice started his career at Chelsea, playing as a centre back. And this is where Lampard wants to bring him in playing.

The 21-year old has captained West Ham in the last couple of matches playing in midfield, but he has also been used as a centre back by the hammers.

But it is his leadership qualities that Lampard enjoys, as well as his clear ability.

Chelsea will need to make room for Rice though if he does join, having already got four centre backs in the squad.

It is Fikayo Tomori who could make way, as per The Athletic’s report. Chelsea could loan him out this summer to fit Rice in.
