“I had to give it a chance” – Chelsea midfielder tries not to have regrets after disaster spell

Danny Drinkwater has had quite the career.

He couldn’t have been riding higher after winning the title with Leicester, and he leveraged that success into a move to Chelsea a year later.

Since then, it’s fair to say things haven’t worked out. He’s barely played, and has in fact gone through some terrible loan spells at Aston Villa and Burnley, getting himself in trouble off the pitch along the way too.

Frankly, things have been a disaster, but in an interview with the Leicester Mercury that came out today he insists that he doesn’t regret it.

“I try not to regret things… but learn,” Drinkwater insisted.

“Things haven’t gone as good as I hoped after I left Leicester because of one thing or another but I had to give it a chance.”

That’s fair enough – who could turn down Chelsea, with a massive contract included, when they come calling?

But after that there were things that were within his control that perhaps he should regret – headbutting a teammate or his drunk driving for another.

Still, there’s time for him to recover, and perhaps this long break will have given him a chance to think about where he’s gone wrong in the past. He’s still got some years ahead of him – let’s hope they go better than the last few; and let’s hope they’re not spent at Stamford Bridge.
