Striker unlikely to sign new deal as Chelsea line up free signing in the summer

Chelsea are expected to do some business in the summer transfer window after going through the last two only signing one player.

Mateo Kovacic joined from Real Madrid, but he was already on loan at the time. Other than that, they were banned from signing players last summer and decided against making any signings in the winter window due to targets not being available.

However, not all of their summer targets will cost them a fee if the latest report is true.

The Daily Mail believe that The Blues will go back in for Napoli forward Dries Mertens in the summer after failing to land him in January.

And they cite Italian publication Gazzetta dello Sport in suggesting that Mertens is ‘increasingly unlikely’ to sign a new contract with Napoli, meaning he will be available as a free agent come the end of the season.

Chelsea could see him as an experienced addition to bulk out the squad being able to play a number of attacking positions.
