New loan rules set to change Chelsea’s transfer strategy for good

FIFA have today announced new rules regarding the loaning of players, set to come into force gradually over the next few seasons, which will fundamentally change Chelsea’s transfer strategy.

Since FFP was introduced, Chelsea have focused on buying younger players, loaning them out for exposure and experience, and then selling them for a profit.

Those who make the grade for the first team are integrated – see Thibaut Courtois, Andreas Christensen, etc., and those who don’t can just be sold on.

Now the rules will limit the number of loans each club is allowed to make, with only 8 permitted next season for over 22 year old players loaned outside England, reducing to 6 players in 2022/23.

So while we will still be able to send out youngsters to League 1, the kind of Tiemoue Bakayoko loans we’re indulging in now will no longer be as feasible.

Our squad planning in the future will have to be a lot more efficient, and the loan-to-buy setups we’ve seen in recent times with Alvaro Morata and Mario Pasalic will also likely become a thing of the past.
