How Lodi’s fantastic Atletico form affects Marcos Alonso’s future

Atletico Madrid were linked with a move for Marcos Alonso this summer, as the Spanish club looked to regenerate following a summer that saw swathes of their starting XI leave and be replaced by new faces.

One of those signings was Renan Lodi, the talented left back from Brazil, signed to replace his outbound countryman, Felipe Luis.

Before Lodi’s arrival, the club from the Spanish capital were constantly linked with Alonso. Even once the young talent was secured, the links continued.

Alonso has lost his place in the Chelsea team once again it seems, after a string of good showings were followed by one and a half very bad ones. Emerson looks set to make the first team role his own again, and the way seems clear for Alonso to move.

His problem now is that young Lodi has settled in immediately in Spain, and has been hailed as perhaps the best of their summer additions. Alonso may now seem surplus to requirements for Diego Simeone, just as he might for Frank Lampard too.
