Why Lyon’s interest in Olivier Giroud could spark a Dembele swap deal

Lyon have ‘already made first contact’ in their interest in signing Chelsea striker Olivier Giroud, according to French publication Soccer Link.

Giroud is obviously unhappy with his bit part role, and would jump at moving to a club that can guarantee him more playing time in January.

Chelsea are transfer banned but are in works to get it lifted for January. If Giroud and Michy Batshuayi both asked to leave to get more game time, Frank Lampard could find himself in the hunt for a new striker.

Even though Giroud wouldn’t be worth hardly anything at all due to his contract running down, the report from Soccer Link does state that Lyon are looking at Giroud as a replacement for their striker Moussa Dembele, who they would allow to leave in January for the right deal.

That right deal, might include Giroud, should Chelsea decide to chase a player who they have had an interest in before.

In fact, there were a number of reports from good Chelsea sources admitting the club were targeting Dembele back in 2017, including this one from former Evening Standard Chelsea correspondent Simon Johnson.

So this is something that wouldn’t be a shock if it did happen.
