Former Chelsea manager believes Blues work-horse should play deeper

Chelsea lost to Liverpool last night in the Super Cup Final, narrowly missing out on the lottery that is penalties.

One of Chelsea’s best performers on the night was N’Golo Kante, who was absolutely everywhere.

Blues fans weren’t expecting to see him feature due to injuries, yet he ended up playing the whole match, including extra time.

Kante has a match engine second to none, he seems to be able to keep running for an eternity, bringing so much to that Chelsea midfield.

There has been an on-going debate regarding his position. Last season under Maurizio Sarri, Kante was playing very advanced in a midfield three.

This season Frank Lampard has opted for a deep lying two man pivot, which is where Kante would likely play.

However, last night Lampard went for a midfield three, and Kante was back in his role from last season.

Some believe though, that the France international should be playing as a holding midfielder.

One man that holds this opinion is former Chelsea boss, Glenn Hoddle.

Hoddle told BT Sport, as reported by Football London:

“Last year, I was surprised that Sarri wanted him to play as an eight and get himself forward.

“In my opinion, he’s the best holding player, deep-lying midfield player in the world, possibly. The energy that he gets, it’s like having two players in there and it gives you that added player you can put in midfield.

“So I don’t see him as an attacking midfield player, ahead of the ball. I think if you sit him in there – but you’ve got Jorginho to do that so I’m really interested to see how Frank’s going to play that midfield.”
