Premier League rivals could swoop for Chelsea’s classy midfielder

The Daily Mirror yesterday reported that Mateo Kovacic could join a different Premier League team if Chelsea can’t sign him this summer.

He was brought in on a one year loan deal with a view to a permanent move, and given he’s played 43 appearances he would certainly be someone it would be logical to sign.

But the transfer ban would make that impossible. Even though Kovacic seems to be liking life in London, he also doesn’t want to go back to Real Madrid, who have reappointed Zinedine Zidane.

So it seems there’s a chance that he would go elsewhere in the English top flight to play minutes away from Madrid. That would be yet another unfortunate consequence of the ban currently afflicting us.

While his attacking influence has been limited, he’s shown the kind of technical ability that definitely makes him a prospect for the future.
