Barcelona midfield star closer than ever to exit – but will this one thing hold Chelsea’s bid back?

The idea of Ivan Rakitic moving to Chelsea has been discussed for some time.

We were linked with him way back when he was at Sevilla, but obviously lost out to Catalan giants Barcelona in the end.

He’s given them some sterling service in midfield, coming up against supreme countryman Luka Modric in plenty of Clasicos and coming out on top.

Now he’s 31 however, and Barca look to be moving on. They’ve signed Artur Melo, and have youngsters like Carles Alena coming through the academy.

That might mean Rakitic is ripe for one last move, andthe Sun are among the papers reporting that Chelsea are among the teams looking to make that happen.

There are some obstacles – his age makes him a less tempting prospect for the board, but as we saw with Gonzalo Higuain last month, if a player over 30 is someone the manager really wants, the people upstairs will make an exception.
