“I still want Mudryk to be a star and I know they’ll be people rolling their eyes and all of that.
“Again you’ve got to understand that this is a very young man who’s come from one football culture to another, from one incidentally very troubled country to ours, leaving behind – these are human beings with families and issues.
“I really hope that Chelsea fans can find it in themselves to cut him a good deal more slack, even over the coming months because it might take in his case two years, three years before the penny properly drops.
“He’s clearly a fabulous athlete, he’s clearly very well intentioned and properly motivated, he wants to do well and I’m pretty certain given time he could be a standout star.”
We’re all for giving players when they earn them, and we’re all for not ever writing off a player fully. Anyone who has watched football for a long time has had a player prove you totally wrong at some point.
But the fact that there’s a small chance he comes good doesn’t disguise there’s a much bigger chance that he doesn’t, and he can’t expect to play much while he’s contributing so little to the team. The best idea would have been to keep him on loan at Shakhtar for the rest of last year, then perhaps send him out again this year. He’s just not ready, and it doesn’t help his development to be playing sporadically, when he’s not at the right standard yet.
