Fabrizio Romano shoots down Chelsea links to latest European wonderkid

Yesterday we reported on some of the growing links between Chelsea and Wolfsburg wonderkid David Odogu, and today we’ve had the opinion of Fabrizio Romano on the matter come through.

In his exclusive column for Caughtoffside, the Italian transfer insider dampened any hopes that a deal may be imminent. As always, he covered his tracks by repeating how talented and in demand the young centre back is, without claiming knowledge of any specific Chelsea interest in him:

“Chelsea have been linked with 2006-born David Odogu by some reports, but I’m not aware of any talks or contacts,” Romano wrote.

“He’s a very good player, a good talent for the future. I think he’s very talented – he needs game time to improve and develop, but his potential is very good.”

This is all pretty much as we expected. We have no doubt that Odogu is on Chelsea’s list as one of many brilliant talents around Europe, but it feels like any really concrete link between the two has been fabricated, or at least exaggerated.

Let’s park this until next summer, and see if it builds up any more momentum by then – when the defender will likely have made his first team bow.
