“The position” – National manager explains why he called up one Chelsea player but not another

We have began another round of international matches last night, with more on tonight and over the weekend.

Cole Palmer has been fantastic for Chelsea since joining from Manchester City in the summer, and his form was rewarded with his first callup to the England national side.

It was a fully deserved callup, but also raised more questions as to why Raheem Sterling was still being ignored despite injury withdrawals from the squad.

Southgate has explained that Palmer got the nod ahead of him purely because he plays centrally and that is the position he wanted the cover in, which I guess is a fair point.
