Cole Palmer has been fantastic for Chelsea since joining from Manchester City in the summer, and his form was rewarded with his first callup to the England national side.
It was a fully deserved callup, but also raised more questions as to why Raheem Sterling was still being ignored despite injury withdrawals from the squad.
Southgate has explained that Palmer got the nod ahead of him purely because he plays centrally and that is the position he wanted the cover in, which I guess is a fair point.
Gareth Southgate: "In terms of Cole Palmer, the key was we lost James Maddison and Jude Bellingham so we wanted somebody who could play as a 10. Raheem Sterling was excellent against City, as was Cole. But the position was the reason for calling up Cole really."
