Two key midfielders should be ready for action despite long trips

The opening questions in today’s Mauricio Pochettino press conference was about Enzo Fernandez and Moises Caicedo and their fitness.

The two are Chelsea’s new midfielder starting pair, and under normal circumstances we’d expect to see them both starting on Sunday against Bournemouth. But both played in South America over the international break, and Pochettino was asked whether that might affect his decision to pick them.

He sounded very confident that Enzo would make it, saying he was “good” with “good energy” today in training.

On Caicedo he was less confident, saying that the Ecuadorian would need to be assessed a little more because he arrived later than Enzo, but Pochettino still admitted he “hoped” to be able to pick his record signing in the team to face Bournemouth.

We hope risks aren’t being taken with their fitness – and the fact that Romeo Lavia has picked up an injury just when he might have been useful is extra frustrating.
