Chelsea had contract in hand for 19 year old defender before Barca swoop

Chelsea certainly didn’t hold back when it came to signing a host of brilliant young players this summer- but it seems they could have had one more.

Sport today report that the Blues had a contract “in hand”, ready and prepared for Mika Faye, the outstanding young central defender who ultimately chose Barcelona.

The Blaugrana had apparently been tracking the talent for some time, but their difficult economic situation made a move before impossible. However once Chelsea and Belgian side Genk joined the race, Xavi’s team knew it was now or never, and they decided to push the button.

Chelsea offered more money, and Genk were willing to offer a direct route to the first team, but with the help of their local scour Moussa Koné, Barca got the deal done just in time.

Well, you can’t sign them all… we’ve got central defenders to last us for a decade already.
