Chelsea benefit from Southgate’s strange Colwill call

Levi Colwill can be rightly frustrated that he was in England’s squad for this international break but didn’t make his debut.

The centre back looks likely to be one of his country’s best options for the Euros next summer, yet Gareth Southgate didn’t elect to start him against Ukraine or in the friendly against Scotland. One would think that this would have been the perfect time to introduce him with just 9 months until he’s likely to be a starter for his country.

From a selfish Chelsea perspective however, it’s a good thing. Colwill is one of the few players in the squad to have started all 5 games in the season so far, and so giving him a fortnight without competitive action can only be a positive from that point of view.

Mauricio Pochettino will now have no issues playing him again this Sunday, although rising pressure to move him into central defence and bring Ben Chilwell back to play left back may mean a position change.
