Santos president admits Chelsea are on the verge of €20m wonderkid signing

Chelsea’s deal for Deivid Washington is almost done – as we reported earlier he’s already said goodbye to Santos fans on social media.

Now we’re getting the final confirmation of the fee, from the highest possible source. SportWitness has translated the quotes from Santos club president Andres Rueda, who has spent the last few weeks defending the sale of the wonderkid, who is clearly seen as the future of the Brazilian club:

“It’s a little more [than previously suggested], €17m in cash and €3m for bonuses, but bonuses that we can call mandatory, because they are all achievable,” he explained in a press conference defending the sale.

““It was already known, it was in the planning, that we would need to sell at least two players to balance the club’s accounts.”

That’s a lot of money for a team in the Brazilian league, but on the other hand the fans clearly think he will be worth a lot more before too long. That can only be a good thing for Chelsea, who are banking on this whole crop of South American stars rapidly increasing in value to offset the insane spending of the last 12 months.
