Chelsea announced the signing of Lesley Ugochukwu on the club’s official website (this was a couple of days ago but we missed out on it then).
To go through the details – the Blues have kept up their long contract strategy by giving the former Rennes midfielder a 7 year deal with the option of an 8th that can be activated by the club.
The fee is something around £25m, and the sporting directors had their usual gushing comments to add:
“We’re delighted Lesley is joining Chelsea. He is an impressive young player who has already made his mark in Ligue 1. He has a huge amount of potential and we know he is going to continue to develop and improve. We are pleased that he has joined us in the U.S and that he will be able to integrate with the squad quickly.”
Despite his talent it’s something of an odd signing as he’s just 19 years old. So he fits in the category of talented young central midfielders without a huge amount of experience (a category we already have a lot of players in) but doesn’t actually help with our desperate need for an experienced centre mid.
Still, a good player is a good player in the end, and he may well play a role in the first team season.
