Chelsea’s financial rule breaches explained – points penalty unlikely for Blues

There have been some headlines in the press today screaming about Chelsea being investigated for breaches of the Premier League’s rules with regards to finances.

If you’re not clear what’s happened, on Sky Sports Kaveh Solhekol had a very solid explanation of the story in the clip you can see embedded here:

It’s all a question of events when Roman Abramovich was still the owner of the club. Essentially, Chelsea misreported how much money they were spending and how much money they were bringing in.

When the new ownership were looking  at the accounts last summer, doing their due diligence on the asset they wanted to buy, they noticed these discrepancies and reported them to UEFA, the FA and FIFA.

Chelsea have already been fined for this by UEFA, and now we’re awaiting the results of the Premier League’s investigation. A points deduction is possible, but given they self-reported, that seems very unlikely.
