Chelsea target’s new contract has higher release clause – sporting directors truly messed this one up

Chelsea have a terrible day on several fronts, with one of the most alarming issues being the collapse of the move for Michael Olise, our prime attacking option for the season ahead.

The deal seemed done, and there didn’t seem to be any way Crystal Palace could fight back. But Chelsea’s approach for him was clearly very clumsy, and the Blues have backed away for fear of being accused of tapping up.

Olise has also signed a new contract at Palace, but it’s been confirmed that there is a minimum fee release clause included in the new deal.

Chelsea won’t risk signing him this summer, but in a year’s time expect us to be at the front of the queue of clubs looking to bring him in. Presumably this new clause is significantly higher than the £35m option rumoured to be triggered this year, so whatever happens, we’re royally messed this one up.

  1. Brennan Johnson is actually pretty much comparable to Olise in terms of potential.

He scored more goal last season, and is more naturally suited to a No10 role than Olise.

I very much doubt that Chelsea did anything wrong, and it was Steve Parrish throwing his toys out the pram and threatening legal action that led us to sensibly back off – a tribunal was the last thing we wanted.

Some you win, and some you lose. Just accept it, and stop this constant moaning

  2. BTW

This is what TBR have to say about the lad:

“Johnson made an impressive impact in his first year in the Premier League last season, scoring eight times as Steve Cooper’s men kept themselves up.

He could certainly be a smart signing for Spurs, who, of course, sold Harry Kane last week. It says a lot that at least a fifth of the teams in the Premier League want to secure his signature.

He is a ‘wonderful‘ prospect who is only going to improve. And it will disappoint a lot of Tottenham fans if he now moves to Chelsea – particularly if he fancied joining Spurs”

Hardly the disaster you paint the situation as!!!!!

  3. Oh, Mr Homewood! It seems that toys are being ejected from the perambulater by a certain member of the rich & privileged Six. Hurts, doesn’t it? It is, of course, unthinkable that Olise prefers to play football rather than warm the bench. Turning down an opportunity to join the Six – nobody could possibly do that, could they.? So let’s invent spurious talk about legal action. Last season: CP 11th, Chelsea 12th.

  4. Typical SuperFrank to be bemoaning something (usually with little thought as to whether it makes sense or is consistent with other things he’s said). Only a week ago he’s hysterical that we’ve blown the approach for Caicedo, the next minute he’s promoting videos with pundits saying we’ve overpaid for them. Which is it?

It’s similar with Olise. First off, one has to ask whether the player really wanted to come to Chelsea if just inked a new deal with CP (one which he obviously knew would make a deal more difficult given the increased release clause). And, second, is he really the best fit (for the money) given what our squad needs? The first appears highly questionable and the second is certain not obviously the case. So, it really begs the question: Why the hand-wringing from SuperFrank? Why not just report the facts (as Simon Phillips generally does well) and leave out the valueless editorializing and pointless moaning.
