Chelsea goalkeeper gets unexpected first loan to Belgium

Fabrizio Romano is this morning exclusively reporting that Gabriel Slonina is going to join Belgian side KAS Eupen on loan, potentially as soon as today.

After signing for us a year ago, the youngster stayed at Chicago Fire to see out the MLS season, before joining our Development Squad for the remainder of the European season and then coming on the preseason tour with the first team.

A loan has long been expected for this summer as the USA international looks to get started in European football, and while KAS Eupen are hardly a household name, they should be a good choice.

The reason for these loans is playing time, and as a goalkeeper that can be hard to come by. Managers are reluctant to risk youngsters in goal, so often we see stoppers drop down to a lower level than their talent to ensure they play.

Hopefully this is a well chosen destination and we see him rack up a long year of playing time in Belgium.
