£25m is the crazy amount Chelsea will pay for average goalkeeper

David Ornstein is reporting that Chelsea have agreed a £25m fee for Brighton goalkeeper Robert Sanchez.

The 25 year old will come in as competition for Kepa Arrizabalaga, who appears to once again be unsellable given his wages and the fee Chelsea want for him.

Sanchez had a spell where he was considered a really top keeper, but fell out of favour last season and wasn’t even the Seagulls first choice by the end of the campaign.

All that hard work and good luck in shifting Edouard Mendy to a Saudi Arabian club, only to spent £25m on a keeper who isn’t any better?

We’d love to be proven wrong, but to us this looks like a terrible move. Either buy a top goalkeeper and replace Kepa or get a cheap veteran option to compete with him. This is a halfway house just like Mendy was, and it will likely end in the same way.

  1. What an ill informed article. Sanchez is a very good international keeper but not what DeZerbi required in that he was not comfortable with the playing style of the goalkeeper being the key person in starting attacks. He was dropped and threw his toys out of the pram …

  2. As a Brighton fan I can assure you Sanchez is a decent keeper. His weaknesses are flapping at crosses and being far too casual with his passing out from the back. Too cocky by half. Great shot stopper. However there has to be a question over his attitude, as shown by refusing to play when dropped. Ben Robert’s will get the best out of him.
Now splash the cash on Caicedo.
