Chelsea prepare to make “formal bid” for striker

Simon Johnson of the Athletic has an important update on Chelsea’s interest in Montpellier’s Elye Wahi.

The 20 year old striker scored 19 goals in 33 appearances in the French top flight last season, and has attracted a lot of attention from top clubs. The Blues apparently intend to buy him and loan him to their new sister club in that division, RC Strasbourg.

If Wahi wants to keep playing regularly, which it seems he does, it seems a great option all round. If he continues to develop he can come back and play in the first team, but he stays in a place where he’s comfortable for now and can build his skillset – and value.

Strasbourg finished below Montpellier in the table last season, but significant investment funded by Todd Boehly’s BluCo this summer could boost the Alsatians to the top end. Patrick Vieira has been appointed as manager.

Johnson says that Chelsea are going to make a “formal bid” for Wahi, which may trigger offers from other interested parties.

  1. Why are Chelsea going after players that are then being loaned out when they should be going for players that will be 1st team players now.
