Signing controversial defender would ruin Chelsea’s chances of keeping young star

Harry Maguire is well established as the main punchline of the Premier League now, and headline writers know they can throw his name into a story to generate many quote tweets and clicks.

That’s why we don’t take any stories involving him too seriously, and that includes the one that emerged late last night claiming that Manchester United were going to try and throw him into a deal for Mason Mount to knock the price down.

This doesn’t make sense for all sorts of reasons, but the main one is that we’re already overstocked at centre back, and the last thing we need is another – whether they would be Harry Maguire or not.

It’s already going to be an almighty struggle to convince Levi Colwill he’s got a chance of significant minutes this season when there’s such a large group of central defender competing for what is likely to be just two starts spots, with no European games either.

That will only grow more difficult if we suddenly decide to sign the England captain too. So it’s just not going to happen.

Maguire is a decent player and some of the ridicule he gets is silly – but there’s no way that Chelsea will be considering him as a serious option, and fans shouldn’t pay attention to silly stories like this when there are more important things to worry about this summer.
