Real Madrid links are a long shot for forward with 47 goal contributions

Kai Havertz is a surprise name being linked with a move to Real Madrid to replace Karim Benzema.

After an up and down season, Benzema is increasingly being linked with a move to Saudi Arabia sooner rather than later, and even if he stays put for another year, a succession plan needs to be in place.

They apparently have Havertz on their shortlist, with Carlo Ancelotti set to meet the sporting directors to begin planning for next season within the next few days.

It’s the latest in a string of Havertz rumours that don’t quite convince us. We’re sure Kai could do well in La Liga, but we really can’t see Madrid seriously considering him as an alterative to the prolific and brilliant Benzema, who has been at the heart of so much success there, especially in recent years.

We can just about stretch to imagining the Spanish club taking him on loan for a season on very favourable terms and seeing if he fits in, but a permanent deal sounds far fetched. Havertz has 47 goals and assists in 139 games at Chelsea, mainly playing as a number 9.

If these rumours continue to come around we will have to take things a little more seriously, but for now we’re happy to chalk this one up to just paper talk. Havertz will be linked with plenty of teams this summer, and Chelsea would happily sell at the right price, but this one looks like a non starter.
