“Everything indicates” – Mateo Kovacic explains what people are expecting of him this summer

Mateo Kovacic is being linked with an exit from Chelsea quite heavily this summer. Everything is lining up for it – his contract ends in a year, he had a pretty poor season, and the club are looking to refresh from top to bottom.

If there ever was a time to leave, it’s now. But on international duty he remained pretty coy – despite flirting a little with the idea of leaving. Speaking on Croatia duty, he said the following:

“I have one year left on my contract with Chelsea. It’s been a really bad season. Everything indicates that after five years I’ll change the environment, but we’ll see what happens.

“Right now I’m only focused on Croatia and the Nations League. Manchester City is a top team and deserves to be in the Champions League final. That’s what I have to say. The summer is long, we’ll see what happens.

“Chelsea for me is phenomenal. I love the city and the fans, they love me, I have wonderful memories of Chelsea. We’ll see what happens.”

We’d be sad to see him go, but equally, the time is right, and if Manchester City or someone else interested makes a good offer, the club certainly won’t stand in his way, and if we’re interpreting these words right, he wouldn’t say no to going.

The summer has a long way to run – in fact these Croatia games mean his season isn’t even over yet – but we could get a resolution pretty quickly.
