Chelsea “hope for more clubs” to help drive up price past £75m – but there is a major problem

Fabrizio Romano is in a Chelsea frenzy right now.

You can barely open his Twitter without being hit by an update, whether that’s on comings or goings. We suspect that it’s going to be like this for the rest of the month, before things start to calm down after the FFP deadline on the 30th.

Right now one of the hot topics in terms of sales is Kai Havertz, who looks like he could be out of the door before that date. He’s being strongly linked with Real Madrid, who are clearly front of the queue in terms of interest.

But according to Romano’s update today, the Blues “hope for more clubs to join the race.” Of course they. They want to recoup at the very least the £76m-odd they paid for him, and at the moment Madrid are pushing for something more like £50m.

Chelsea need other teams to get interested and start bidding that price up, as soon as possible. It’s hard to know which teams that might be however. Bayern Munich are always keen on top German stars, but they’ve got their own troubles behind the scenes following the departure of their sporting directors, so we don’t expect anything too concrete from them anytime soon.

Apart from that, it’s hard to think of teams with the kind of spending power required to pay north of £70m who would be interested.
