Chelsea and Real Madrid to face off for top European forward

The Times have a long piece about Chelsea’s summer transfer business in today’s paper.

The Blues are apparently keen to make between 3 and 6 signings, with one of the top priorities known to be finally securing a striker to solve their endless issues up top.

Lautaro Martinez of Inter Milan is a name which has come up before, and it looks like he could really be a target now, as other potential buys fade into the background. His shared nationality with incoming coach Mauricio Pochettino is talked up as significant, and with Martinez having won Serie A and reached the Champions League final this year, he may well feel he’s gone as far as he can at Inter and wants a new challenge in a new league – with a vast new salary to boot.

There is one major problem, and that’s Real Madrid. With Karim Benzema having left, they’re now also in the market for a centre forward, and they are not a team you want to be competing with. Their attraction for players is immense, and they’ve got money to throw at the problem now having lost Benzema, Eden Hazard and Marco Asensio from their wage bill.

If Real Madrid want Martinez it will be hard to beat them to his signature. Our best hope is that they prefer Harry Kane, and go all out to sign him instead, leaving us with a free run at Martinez.
