70 goal free agent striker could end up being a better Aubameyang later this summer – if Chelsea are desperate

Moussa Dembele of Lyon is now a free agent.

The former Celtic and Fulham striker is going to attract plenty of attention from teams, but has yet to be linked with Chelsea and other top tier sides looking for a striker. That’s probably just because there are other great options out there – but we would expect him to be mentioned later in the summer as the other options are taken off the table. And that could well include Chelsea, who were certainly linked here and there in the past when he was considered a more promising prospect.

Dembele scored 70 goals and got 19 assists in 172 games for Lyon, not a bad return at all. He’s got a bit of speed, a bit of finishing and certainly his time in Scotland showed he can score at a scary rate when his team are largely dominant in games.

We are by no means expecting Chelsea to be interested now – they will be aiming much higher and looking to buy a world class striker if they can find one.

But that was their objective last summer, and they ended up panic buying Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang, only to barely use him. We would rather have had Dembele then – and there’s nothing wrong with being ready for the worst case scenario this summer if we end up in a sticky situation once again.

We could do a lot better than Dembele, but on a free, we could do a lot worse too.
