N’Golo Kante drifting further away from contract renewal

A couple of months ago the insiders were telling us all that N’Golo Kante was keen to stay at Chelsea, and that the club were happy to have him. It seemed like just a matter of time before a short extension was agreed.

But nothing has happened on that front, and Fabrizio Romano has today reported that the situation is “unclear again” having previously been at the stage of “very advanced” discussions.

He throws the idea of a move to Saudi Arabia into the ring.

Perhaps the whole situation isn’t helped by the major push there seems to be to recruit a new central midfielder to play alongside Enzo Fernandez. This may be convincing Kante that even if he’s fit, he’s going to play far fewer minutes. Or perhaps that’s convincing the co sporting directors he’s not worth as much as they had previously though to them.

It will be interesting to see how this one develops in the weeks to come, but it’s trending towards a slightly unexpected free transfer departure for a respected veteran. There’s just one month left to decide.
