“His ideal scenario” – David Ornstein on midfielder’s future, confirms talks may have happened this week

David Ornstein has been on Sky Sports this morning talking about Mason Mount and his future at Chelsea.

There isn’t much new to say, and it’s just a continuation of what we already know about Mount. Ornstein confirms that the midfielder’s “ideal scenario” is to stay at Chelsea for years to come, but he hasn’t been offered any deal that he considers acceptable.

That means a queue of top Premier League teams queueing up to sign him, with Liverpool once front runners but not longer seemingly in the race. Like everyone else reporting on this, Ornstein insists on repeating that it’s still possible that Mount is persuaded to sign a new deal – but that seems hopelessly hopeful at this point. Barring a miracle he’s on his way, the only question is where he goes now.

The BBC journalist does add the interesting wrinkle that, due to the fact that Mount is now being heavily linked with Manchester United and the fact that Chelsea played the Red Devils in midweek, it’s possible that the Blues already began informal talks with United back then.

Either way, every update we hear makes it sound less and less likely that any last-ditch contract talks with the academy product will be successful. If it was going to happen, it probably would have happened already. Now the focus is on selling him for as much money as possible.
