Graham Potter thought Enzo Fernandez was “overpriced” at £106.8m reveals stunning article

Jacob Steinbeg’s piece in The Guardian today lays bare the Boehly-Clearlake ownership after a year in charge.

It’s been a disaster, and an expensive one at that, but this piece reveals fascinating new details from behind the scenes.

One new nugget is about Enzo Fernandez, who arrived as a £106.8m signing in January just as the death spiral really began to kick in. The piece claims that Graham Potter thought that the then Benfica was not worth that, and that another signing in his team would damage any fragile chemistry further:

“Potter had warned against too many signings and told the board that Enzo Fernández, the Argentina midfielder, was overpriced at £106.8m. Chelsea pressed ahead, [Behdad]Eghbali instrumental in talks with Benfica.”

If you were to judge him on his performances so far, you might be inclined to agree. Certainly you’d expect the team’s results to get better rather than worse once you’d added the league’s most expensive player to their ranks.

But there’s a great feeling that Enzo is actually a top player, just one playing in a dysfunctional team, and that once there is a structure around him he will thrive.

Let’s hope that’s the case, and that the ghost of Graham Potter isn’t proved right.

  1. Realistically buying Enzo has proven to be a truly terrible decision. He should be sold pronto . There are much better options to enhance the squad with that price tag he carries. The problem however is, what’s his current market value and what’s the most can Chelsea presently secure for him?
