Exclusive from top transfer insider reveals “concrete talks” over €40m midfielder as part of “revolution”

Chelsea are in talks with Manchester City over a sale of midfielder Mateo Kovacic.

It’s been rumoured for some time, but this afternoon Fabrizio Romano has launched an exclusive claiming that there are now “concrete talks” about a move, presumably meaning an initial enquiry has moved on to the preliminary stages of discussing figures.

He adds that Chelsea are “open” to selling him as part of their “midfield revolution,” as the entire squad continues to be refreshed at vast expense.

We saw Jorginho leave in January and N’Golo Kante’s contract expires at the end of this month, meaning the trio which have been our mainstay for almost 5 years will be dissolved, possibly entirely, in a 6 months period.

Kovacic has plenty of talent but is often a frustrating figure instead. There are not many fans who would complain about seeing him go, especially if we get a decent fee. With just one year left on his deal we’re not going to get a crazy sum, but it should be enough to pay off a chunk of whoever we buy to replace him. Transfermarkt has his valuation at €40m flat.

Enzo Fernandez is going to be the central creative hub of this team now, and what we need is not another Kovacic but a really strong, defensively minded, savvy player to shield the defence.

A 25 year old Nemanja Matic would do perfectly – but they don’t grow on trees.
