€17m winger embarrassed by treatment from loan club who aren’t interested in seeing more

Bayer Leverkusen last night posted a thank you to Callum Hudson-Odoi on their social media channels, which raised a few eyebrows.

What’s unusual about this is that their season isn’t over yet. They still have to play Bochum this weekend to finish the campaign. Clearly, Hudson-Odoi is not going to feature. A loan move which was supposed to kickstart his career with a flood of minutes is petering out in disappointing fashion like so many of his years at Chelsea did.

Leverkusen have ended up in 6th, earning a place in the Europa Conference League next season, as well as making it to the semi finals of this year’s competition, but Hudson-Odoi’s impact on that ha been minimal.

After some sparks in his early games which made it seem like he was going to make an impact, the arrival of Xabi Alonso as the club’s new manager relegated him to a supporting role, and his minutes dwindled so much from there that he’s now being bundled out of the back door like this.

Another disappointing season in a disappointing career is thus notched up. What is next for Callum, we really can’t say, but a sale at a modest price is very much on the cards now. He’s rated as a €17m player by Transfermarkt. Whether he can still salvage a top level career now looks less and less certain.
