€15m Chelsea wonderkid names this surprising choice as his dressing room idol

Chelsea fans have known about Cesare Casadei for almost a year now after the club signed him from Inter Milan’s youth academy for €15m last summer, but now the rest of the footballing world is waking up to his ability.

Two goals and an assist in the opening game of the U20 World Cup will do that for you, and it led directly to an interview in Italy’s top sport paper the Gazzetta. He spoke about his progress in England after 6 months in the development squad and 6 month son loan at Reading:

“I think I’ve made progress, I’ve improved in any aspect in the last year. I put all I have in training, I often speak to my coaches asking them what I can add.

“I’ve found a different reality in the Championship, going from the youth sector to the first team is a big step, it’s not easy but it makes you improve.

“I only focus on the pitch, I lived the transfer window with serenity and I was waiting for what happened. Things that were said about me have never been a matter of concern.”

There are tons of interesting bits in there which reveal a lot about his character, but particularly notable was his selection of his idol from the Chelsea dressing room:

“I was lucky between Inter and Chelsea, I shared the dressing room with many champions and I try to learn from anyone, but if I have to name one, I’d say Thiago Silva.”

It’s an odd one – Casadei is a tall midfielder while Silva is a small midfielder, but of course these things go a lot deeper than just size or position. Silva is a living legend of the game who has won it all and inspires players all over the world in all sorts of positions.

  1. When did Silva become a small midfielder? There is so much nonsense written these days.

    1. While rooms should be left for human errors, some articles are really appalling.
Efforts need to be put in proofing before publishing them.
