Confusion over “loan preference” in potential €60m deal

After raiding Benfica for Enzo Fernandez in January, Chelsea seem to be lining up the rest of their midfield to come from the Liga NOS too. Defensive midfielder has been a hole in the team for a long time, and needs to be solved.

The Portuguese press is red hot with rumours about a potential move for Ugarte, and it had some interesting details in their cover story today. PSG made the first move, but Chelsea have apparently come in hard and matched their offer.

The Blues had scouts at the 2-2 derby draw between Benfica and Sporting last week to check out the Uruguay international, and subsequently made it clear they were going to pay what it took to get Ugarte.

Chelsea have apparently already indicated they’re willing to match his €60m release clause, and the story also adds that they will include extra bonuses to sweeten the deal.

One confusing part in the story is the idea that Sporting will get a “preference for loan.”

It could be a misunderstanding – there are plenty of other players who we would happily loan there, but we’re not sure why we would sign a 22 year old full international in a position that we’re desperately short on in the first team, only to loan him back to where we bought him from. He’s not an 18 year old, the whole reason to spend €60m or more on him is that he’s ready to play now.
